Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain Sensory Bin

As a homeschooling mama to a big kid and a toddler, it can be hard to find activities that bring our mini mighty guy into the homeschool routine. He’s a new two year old and not quite ready for pre-school type lessons, but he’s incredibly curious and always wants to do what big sister is doing.

While sensory bins cause mess, they’ve been a great way for us to have some sort of tie in to the lessons we’re doing.

This week, we’ll be doing a new science activity based on the book Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain. I’ll read the book to the two of them together. My second grader will have a science unit to work on while my toddler will have access to this sensory bin.

What we used:
1 cup rice dyed green
1 cup rice dyed blue
Cotton balls
Safari toob animals
Watercolor paper painted blue and cut into raindrops

While I fully expect EJ to play in the bin, mixing and scooping the rice, I do have some things I can work on with him.

Learning Ideas:
Counting cotton balls
Naming animals/ animal sounds
Fine motor skills with picking up raindrops

EJ loves having sensory bins and big sister is excited for him to have something related to what she is learning.
