Sweep: A Book Celebration Guide
Literature guides are wonderful. I’ve used and written several for our homeschool. They can also feel overwhelming when you have a solid booklist of things you are reading with your children. It’s also enjoyable to add in extra reading from time to time.
These simple literature guides are not meant to be a full language arts curriculum. Little World Wanderers Book Celebration guides are a simple way to celebrate finishing a new read-aloud with an afternoon of crafts, recipes, and meaningful discussions. To make things simpler and more streamlined for you, we have opted to reduce the noise and bring it back to basics. Sometimes less really is more.
What is included:
-Discussion Questions
-One recipe
-One Craft
-Once science experiment
Each guide is meant to be to be used in a single afternoon as a way to wrap up and celebrate completing a book.
"Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster" by Jonathan Auxier is a heartfelt tale about a young girl named Nan Sparrow, who lives in Victorian London. Nan is a chimney sweep, a tough and dangerous job, especially for a child. She was raised by a kind-hearted Sweep, but he disappeared, leaving her alone to survive. One day, while cleaning a chimney, Nan gets trapped and nearly dies. Instead, she is saved by a mysterious, soot-covered creature she calls Charlie, who is actually a golem—a friendly monster made of ash and soot.
As Nan and Charlie become friends, they learn to protect and care for each other, forming a unique family. Through their adventures, Nan faces the challenges of her world, including the harsh conditions of chimney sweeps and her own fears. Together, Nan and Charlie discover the power of friendship, love, and courage. This magical story blends history, fantasy, and heartfelt emotions, making it perfect for middle school readers.
